In our community

Cove Legal is a strong supporter of mental health initiatives within the local community including:

Ride for Youth

As a keen cyclist, Roger has been a long time participant in the Hawaiian Ride for Youth, a week-long cycling fundraiser (about 750kms, from Albany to Perth) to raise funds for Youth Focus. The event now raises over $2M each year for that charity and Roger has appeared each year as one of the school presenters, delivering positive mental health messages to pupils in local schools along the journey.

Cove Legal Racing at the Tour of Margaret River

Cove Legal has also established its own cycling race team, Cove Legal Racing, that participates each year in the Tour of Margaret River road racing event and other WA race events throughout the year, and displays its support for mental health charities Youth Focus and Lifeline WA on its race kit. Every year, as part of that event, the team arranges a local high school visit to present messages on positive mental health.

Corporate Battle of the Bands

Roger is the founder of the Corporate Battle of the Bands, an annual fundraising event that sees local corporate bands take to the stage to battle it out in support of local charities Youth Focus and Cystic Fibrosis WA. The event has been running for 10 years and during that time over $70k has been raised for charity.

In the legal community

Mental health is, and has been for some time, one of the biggest challenges facing the legal profession. With 1 in 3 lawyers suffering from depression, high anxiety or stress, we are strong advocates of encouraging discussion on a topic that ironically, for many reasons, is the one topic we talk about the least.

Whilst the debate is often dominated by larger national and global law firms, small firms and in particular, sole practitioners are not immune to the same pressures and mental health issues that plague our colleagues in larger firms at times, but without the support networks available in the larger firms.

In 2017 Cove Legal established a collaborative industry group in Perth under the title ‘smallTALK’ as a forum for small law firms and sole practitioners to share their knowledge of lessons learnt and challenges overcome operating small legal practices. The group seeks to provide a relaxed forum for practitioners to get to know each other better and recognise where particular areas of expertise might lie – and in doing so naturally widen their connections within the profession. smallTALK has grown to include over 90 practitioners from around WA.

The school presentations, supporting our colleagues, fundraising and raising of awareness generally for Lifeline and Youth Focus are vitally important to Cove Legal and we are committed to playing our part to benefit and enrich both the legal profession and also the community at large. We strive to be more than just a commercial law firm.
